The state of Indiana will be the home for the PBA50 Tour the next three weeks as the PBA50 South Shore Open presented by Hammer kicks off a run in the Hoosier State.
It will be another star-studded field this week as nine of the top 10 players on the PBA50 points list take part in the event, which will be broadcast live on FloBowling.
Here’s what to look for at the PBA50 South Shore Open:
Big names are back this week
Two big stars will make their return to the PBA50 Tour this week after taking a week off.
Walter Ray Williams Jr., who is in the hunt for PBA50 Player of the Year, took the week off to compete in the 2018 NHPA World Horseshoe Tournament in Florence, South Carolina. If you didn’t know, Williams isn’t just a great bowler, he’s also a world-champion horseshoe pitcher.
Meanwhile, Parker Bohn III will return after spending the week supporting his children at the massive Junior Gold Championships in the Dallas area. Bohn’s children Justin, Brandon and Sydney competed alongside 4,000 youth bowlers from across the country in the major event.
Mohr set to defend his title
One bowler who will be happy to see Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Indiana, again is defending champion Ron Mohr, who defeated Bob Learn, 213-194, in the championship match last year.
Mohr, a retired air traffic controller who is among the best on the PBA50 tour even at age 62, built a huge lead in the title match last year and coasted to the victory.
The win ended a five-year title drought for Mohr.
Tackling the Shark pattern
This week’s lane pattern will have some teeth as the PBA50 Tour will take on the longest pattern of the season. The PBA Shark pattern comes in at 45 feet with a pattern ratio of 2.35 to 1.
At last year’s event at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Indiana, the field took on the much shorter PBA Viper pattern, so the bowlers will face a much different challenge this time around.
