What To Look For At The 2018 PBA60 Dick Weber Championship
Expect no shortage of high-level competition when the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship, presented by 900 Global, kicks off this Tuesday.
Although we won’t see some of the superstar names that dominate the PBA50 Tour, expect no shortage of high-level competition when the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship, presented by 900 Global, kicks off this Tuesday, August 14.
The tournament will be broadcast live on FloBowling from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and will be limited to those bowlers age 60 and up. Among those scheduled to compete are big name stars like Brian Voss, Tom Baker, Ron Mohr, Harry Sullins and Johnny Petraglia.
Here’s what to look for at the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship:
Voss becomes PBA60 eligible
It may seem hard to believe, but the legendary Brian Voss, a 25-time PBA Tour champion, recently turned 60 and is eligible to compete in the Dick Weber Championship.
With more than $2.5 million in career earnings, Voss is widely considered among the top professional bowlers of all time. Most may be surprised to realize Voss has only won twice on the PBA50 Tour, but that is likely because he has only really bowled part time on the senior tour since becoming eligible.
Voss has been more active on the PBA50 Tour in the past few years and did win his second career title earlier this season at the PBA50 Mooresville Open.
He should certainly be among the favorites to win this week.
Mohr earns top honors among PBA60 players again
Ron Mohr, who at age 62 had another stellar PBA50 season, is another player who should be considered among the favorites for the title this week.
Mohr secured his third straight PBA60 Player of the Year honors this season. He won the award in 2016 and 2017 and was the PBA50 Player of the Year in 2009 and 2011.
If not for Michael Haugen Jr.’s tremendous season on the PBA50 Tour, Mohr could have possibly earned both PBA50 and PBA60 Player of the Year this season. He was in the hunt but Haugen pulled away from everyone to earn the honor.
Dick Weber pattern appears to be high-scoring
It’s only appropriate that the Dick Weber Championship will be contested on the PBA Dick Weber pattern, which comes in at 45 feet with a 2.94 to one pattern ratio.
This won’t be the first time some of the bowlers have seen the Dick Weber pattern. It was used in the PBA50 Baldo Campana Memorial/Ohio Lottery Central Open presented by Motiv back in May where more than half the field averaged over 200.
On the regular PBA Tour, the pattern was used earlier this year during the Go Bowling! PBA 60th Anniversary Classic. In that event, 80 percent of the field averaged better than 200, including PBA60 bowler Ron Mohr.
