Kyle Troup put up the biggest total of the day Saturday as qualifying came to an end at the 2018 Storm Lucky Larsen Masters in Malmo, Sweden, and the cut was made to the finals.
On the second to last qualifying squad of the tournament, Squad 32 of 33, Troup jumped into the Top 8 to earn two byes in Sunday’s finals, which will be broadcast live on FloBowling starting at 1:30 a.m. Eastern. A PBA title will be awarded to the winner if they are a PBA member.
On his third qualifying attempt, Troup improved upon his already sure to advance best score by putting up 1,437 for six games. He closed out the block with games of 249 and 266 to push him into the Top 8 overall to earn an important extra bye.
Australian Jason Belmonte maintained his spot at the top of the leaderboard with 1,497, a total he posted Friday. Jimmy Dan Mortensen of Denmark, who bowled the fourth squad of the tournament on Aug. 26, qualified second with 1,451, while Sean Rash was third with 1,444.
Advancing among the Top 8 along with Belmonte, Mortensen, Rash and Troup was Sweden’s Jesper Svensson, Finland’s Teemu Putkisto, Sweden’s William Svensson and Sweden’s Mattias Wetterberg.
The players who qualified in positions nine through 33 earned one bye in Sunday’s finals. Among the big name PBA players advancing in that group were Liz Johnson, Anthony Simonsen, Stu Williams, Bill O’Neill, Francois Lavoie and Tom Daugherty.
Overall, 390 players attempted to qualify for the finals but only 60 advanced. Throughout the 33 squads of qualifying, 4,175 games were played, totaling 780,739 pins with an overall tournament average of 187.
