Andy Patterson of Tyler, Texas, picked up the victory at the fifth annual PBA Grand Casino Hotel and Resort Southwest Invitational on Sunday afternoon to win his sixth PBA Regional title.
Patterson defeated Chris Hibbitts II of Keller, Texas, 220-158, in the championship match. Neither player qualified high enough Saturday to earn any byes and had to bowl every round of match play.
In the title match, Patterson threw six out of seven strikes from the second frame through the eighth frame to lock up the title. Patterson jumped out to a 31-pin lead after just three frames and never looked back.
“I’ve actually been on standby because my wife is 36 weeks tomorrow, so if I got the call I was leaving right way,” said Patterson, whose last regional win came in May of 2014. “So, this weekend has been a little hectic for both of us, but I made a little adjustment in the Round of 8 that gave me a lot better look and helped me down the stretch.”
On the way to the championship match, Patterson, who qualified as the No. 11 seed for match play, defeated David Scardaville, 2-0, David Krol, 2-1, and Tyler Albracht, 2-1, in the best-of-three matches.
Patterson’s semifinal match was a battle of left-handers as he defeated Mark Scroggins, 279-236, to advance to the championship match. Patterson started off with a pair of spares before rattling off 10 consecutive strikes to close-out the high-scoring match.
In the other semifinal, Hibbitts took down Devin Bidwell of Wichita, Kansas, 238-160. Bidwell got off to a shaky start with opens in the second and third, falling behind by 33 pins early. He never recovered and Hibbitts cruised to the win.
