OWASSO, Okla. – Using a bowling ball that is more than 10 years old, Bill O’Neill fired 812 for his first three games Monday to take the lead after the opening round of the 2018 FloBowling PBA Wolf Open.
O’Neill used a Columbia 300 EPX, a ball that he said hooks less than urethane, to tame the 33-foot Wolf pattern on the fresh. He finished with a six-game total of 1,506, a 251 average, at The Lanes at Coffee Creek.
O’Neill started his day with games of 298, 278 and 236 using the EPX before closing with 207, 252 and 235 to lead the field by more than 75 pins.
AJ Johnson fired the first perfect game of the tournament to help boost him into second place with 1,430, while Sweden’s Markus Jansson sits in third with 1,421. Rounding out the Top 5 are first-squad leader Kristopher Prather with 1,391 and Andrew Anderson with 1,387.
Marshall Kent also bowled a 300 game Monday but it was the lone highlight in the block for him as he sits in 52nd place with 1,259.
All 102 players in the field return for six more games on the Wolf pattern Tuesday to determine the five finalists who will bowl in the stepladder finals LIVE on FloBowling at 7:30 p.m. Central time.
After that, the FloBowling PBA Fall Swing will continue Wednesday and Thursday with the PBA Bear Open and closes out with the PBA Tulsa Open on Friday and Saturday. Scores from both the Wolf and Bear events will determine the 18 finalists for the Tulsa Open.
