FAIRLAWN, Ohio – There are a lot of games to go at the 2019 PBA Tournament of Champions, but Jason Belmonte established himself as one of the players to beat Wednesday.
With a victory this week, Belmonte will tie the record for most career majors with 10, joining Pete Weber and Earl Anthony at the top of that list. After two rounds of qualifying, Belmonte leads the 65-player field with a 12-game total of 2,824, a 235.33 average, at AMF Riviera Lanes.
The field will return Thursday at 11 a.m. Eastern live on FloBowling for the final round of qualifying to determine the top 24 for round robin match play, which begins Thursday night and continues all day Friday.

Belmonte, who won the TOC in 2014 and 2015, was in second place after the first round of qualifying but jumped out to a nearly 100-pin lead after the second round. After finishing with 1,451 to start the day, Belmonte totaled 1,373 in the second round.
“I’m really striving to keep the shape of my ball rolling down the lane smooth and make sure I roll the ball,” Belmonte said. “I wanted to make sure I could get the ball down the lane without a lot of sharp moves which I think helped my strike percentage.”
With games of 225, 247, 245, 215, 214 and 227, Belmonte put together another good block and leads Matt Ogle, who is second with 2,727. Sean Rash sits in third place with 2,698.
Ogle and Rash teamed up to win the Mark Roth-Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship last month, giving Ogle his first career title and earning him a berth in this year’s TOC.
First-round leader Andrew Anderson dropped to fourth place after the second round with 2,693. After shooting 1,470 earlier in the day, Anderson managed just 1,223 in the evening session. Marshall Kent rounds out the top five with 2,690, a 224.17 average.
PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber is currently on the cut line in 24th place with 2,566, a 213.83 average. Weber finished the night with a 265 game to get inside the number with six games of qualifying remaining.
Left-handers in the field struggled mightily during the first two rounds of qualifying with Rhino Page the standard bearer.
Page, who has made two championship round appearances already this season, sits in 15th place after two rounds. The vast majority of the other lefties are near the bottom of the standings.
