Belmonte Leads Heading Into Match Play In Indy
Jason Belmonte found his way back to the top of the leaderboard Thursday afternoon at the 2019 PBA Indianapolis Open.
After having his string of leading 11 consecutive rounds of qualifying or match play broken yesterday, Jason Belmonte found his way back to the top of the leaderboard Thursday afternoon at the 2019 PBA Indianapolis Open.
Belmonte, who was third after the first and second rounds, moved into the top spot with an 18-game total of 4,240, a 235.56 average, at Woodland Bowl. He leads the top 24 players who advanced into match play, which begins at 6 p.m. Eastern today live on FloBowling.
After shooting 1,417 in the first round and 1,386 in the second round, Belmonte put together his best block of the tournament with 1,437 to close out qualifying. He had games of 265, 280, 208, 199, 247 and 238.
Results: PBA Indianapolis Open Qualifying Round 3
Belmonte led 11 consecutive rounds of qualifying and match play dating back to the second round of qualifying at the PBA Tournament of Champions two weeks ago until his streak was broken with the first round of qualifying in Indianapolis yesterday.
For the past two weeks, Belmonte has earned the top seed for the stepladder finals. Should he earn the top seed again this week, he would tie the PBA Tour record for consecutive weeks as the top seed. That record (three) is shared by Earl Anthony, Johnny Petraglia, Walter Ray Williams Jr., and, most recently, Jakob Butturff.
As for the rest of the leaderboard after qualifying in Indianapolis, BJ Moore, who led after the second round, dropped one spot to second with 4,173. Butturff, who missed the cut the past two weeks and is the defending champion this week, is third with 4,163.
Josh Blanchard sits in fourth place with 4,030, while Wes Malott is fifth with 4,026. The last player inside the cut to match play was Kyle Sherman, who was 24th with 3,905, a 216.94 average. JR Raymond was the first out with 3,902.
The players are facing dual patterns this week throughout the event with the left lane conditioned with the 45-foot Dick Weber pattern and the right lane conditioned with the 38-foot Mike Aulby pattern.
