PORTLAND, Maine – One of the biggest upsets yet in the PBA Playoffs took place in the Round of 16 show that aired Monday night as fifth seed EJ Tackett lost in his opening match of the event.
Tackett got knocked out by No. 21 seed Andres Gomez, while fourth seed Anthony Simonsen took down No. 13 Rhino Page.
Here’s a recap of both matches:
No. 4 Anthony Simonsen 2, No. 13 Rhino Page 1
In a tight match where each game came down to the final frame, Simonsen survived and advanced against Page.
In the opening game, Simonsen got out of the gates hot, going spare, triple to build a 21-pin lead. Page, however, popped strikes in the fourth and fifth to cut the deficit to just 11 pins at the commercial break.
The game stayed close in the second half as well, though Page never found his way into the lead. By the time the final frame came around, Simonsen needed just nine, spare, nine for the shutout and delivered a strike on his first shot to win 237-214.
Both players had a chance to win Game 2 in the final frame but the fact that he started with the front five ultimately helped Page to the 226-214 victory.
Finishing the match first, Page needed two strikes and one pin for the shutout but came up light and left the 3-5-6. Simonsen then also needed two strikes and one pin for the sweep but left a blowout 10 pin to send the match to a tiebreaker.
Page opened the tiebreaker with a seven pin, spare and then watched as Simonsen struck in the ninth and got the first one in the 10th frame. With another strike, Simonsen could seal the victory but left a four pin to give Page a chance.
Needing three strikes to win by one pin, Page stuffed a seven pin to lose the tiebreaker, 49-39.
No. 21 Andres Gomez 2, No. 5 EJ Tackett 0
In the biggest upset so far in the PBA Playoffs, Tackett, the fifth seed, was eliminated in the Round of 16 against Gomez.
Tackett got going quick in Game 1, starting with a strike, a spare, and then rattling off four in a row to take a 38-pin lead at the halfway point. Gomez, however, came out of the commercial break on fire, striking in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth frames to get back in the match.
When Gomez stepped up in the final frame, he needed a strike and nine pins to secure the first-game victory and that’s exactly what he got to win 231-228.
The second game got off to an ominous start for Tackett as he left three consecutive 10 pins but he followed it up with a double to take an eight-pin lead after four and a half frames.
Gomez, however, caught fire once again in the middle of the game, throwing six strikes from the fourth to the ninth frame to take control of the game and lock up the match victory, 245-193.
Gomez takes on Simonsen in the Round of 8 in a match that airs May 20.
