Norm Duke and Walter Ray Williams Jr. each totaled 1,479 for six games, a 246.50 average, to share the lead at the first major of the PBA50 season at Spanish Springs Lanes in The Villages, Florida.
Duke started his day with games of 206, 237 and 238 before catching fire and shooting 249, 300 and 249 in the final three games. To watch every shot of Duke’s 300 game, click here.
Williams, meanwhile, got off to a hot start with a 279 game and followed it up with 222, 258, 247, 247 and 226.
Results: PBA50 National Championship Qualifying Round 1
Both players opened the tournament bowling on fresh oil, the first squad of the day. All players this week will bowl one qualifying round on fresh, one on burn and one on double burn before the cut is made to match play.
A trio of super seniors, those 60 and older, occupy the next three spots in the standings with Darryl Bower in third place with 1,424. Tom Baker is fourth with 1,412 and Sammy Ventura is tied for fifth with 1,404.
Defending champion Lennie Boresch Jr. also shot 1,412 and is tied for fifth place. Boresch, who has four career PBA50 titles, has won three times at Spanish Springs Lanes.
The top 32 players after three rounds of qualifying will advance to match play. Mike Dias currently occupies 32nd place with 1,330, a 221.67 average.
The second round of qualifying begins at 9 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday. The event is being broadcast live exclusively on FloBowling.
