The PBA50 Dave Small’s Jax 60 Classic offers one last chance to earn a title this year when it begins Wednesday live on FloBowling.
The PBA60 players won’t be done after this week, however, as they have two events remaining on the schedule in early August.
Here are a few key points to get you ready for the PBA50 Dave Small’s Jax 60 Classic:
One last shot at a title in 2019
Nearly all of the top-ranked players on the PBA50 Tour will compete this week as they try to take advantage of one last shot at a title in 2019.
Of the 15 players on the FloBowling PBA50 Power Rankings, only one will be missing this week as Norm Duke is not currently on the roster.
Walter Ray Williams Jr., the No. 1-ranked player, has already locked up PBA50 Player of the Year honors after his strong performance on Sunday at the PBA50 Spectrum Lanes Open.
Williams’ 2019 campaign started off with three straight victories and he has finished no lower than ninth (at the USBC Senior Masters) all season long. He’s still looking to own the all-time record for PBA50 titles outright with 15. He’s currently tied at 14 with John Handegard.
The tour’s top super senior, 63-year-old Ron Mohr, will look to continue what has been a really strong final stretch to the season. Mohr made the stepladder finals at every event in July. He finished fifth in Monticello, Minnesota, fourth in Hammond, Indiana, first in Anderson, Indiana, and fourth in Wyoming, Michigan.
Brian LeClair has also been on fire in the month of July, winning twice and finishing fifth at the last event. Overall, LeClair has made five stepladder finals appearances in 10 events.
The format and lane condition
The tournament begins with two rounds of qualifying on Wednesday and Thursday. Each round is eight games and all bowlers compete on one squad.
After 16 games of qualifying, all cashers will advance, though not all into the same round.
Based on 96 or more entries, the top eight qualifiers after 16 games will be seeded directly into the second round of match play, while qualifiers ranked No. 9 through No. 24 will be seeded into the first round of match play.
The remaining cashers after qualifying, those ranked 25th or lower, will bowl a five-game cashers qualifying round with the top eight players from that round advancing into the first round of match play.
All pins are dropped before the cashers round and each round of match play. The first round of match play is five games with the eight cashers round advancers joining qualifiers ranked ninth through 24th. The top eight bowlers from this round will advance.
The second round of match play is six games with the top eight from the first round of match play joining the top eight qualifiers.
When all that is said and done, the final five will bowl in the stepladder finals Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern.
The PBA Johnny Petraglia pattern, which is 37-feet long. will challenge the players this week.
How to watch
The only place to watch the PBA50 Dave Small’s Jax 60 Classic is live on FloBowling. Every round of the event from qualifying through the stepladder finals will be broadcast live with archives available immediately after each round ends.
