Although the PBA50 schedule may be over, bowlers who are 60 and older still have two more events to bowl this season as two PBA60 events take place over the course of the next week.
The PBA60 Dave Small’s Jax 60 National Championship gets underway Saturday, while the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship starts Tuesday. Both events will be broadcast live on FloBowling.
Here are a few key points to get you ready for the PBA60 events:
Mohr is the man to beat
There’s little doubt who the best PBA60 player is as 63-year-old Ron Mohr has dominated his peers for years.
Mohr has won the PBA60 Player of the Year award every year he’s been eligible in 2016, 2017, 2018 and almost certainly in 2019.
Last year, Mohr won the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship by climbing the stepladder as the fifth seed.
He beat Chris Keane, 288-215, in the opening match and then toppled Brian Voss, 249-212. In the semifinal, he defeated Sammy Ventura, 224-184, and won the title by striking out in the final frame to beat Harry Sullins, 237-235.
Mohr is in the midst of yet another solid season on the PBA50 Tour as well. He made every stepladder finals in PBA50 events in July, including a win at the Dave Small’s Championship Lanes Classic.
Heading into the final event of the PBA50 season, which is currently underway, Mohr is third overall in points, ahead of names like Amleto Monacelli, Lennie Boresch Jr., Norm Duke, Ryan Shafer, Michael Haugen Jr. and Parker Bohn III.
The format and lane conditions
The upcoming PBA60 events have very similar but not identical formats.
The PBA60 National Championship will feature two seven-game rounds of qualifying with the top 24 players advancing into three rounds of match play. The top five after 30 games will bowl for the title in the stepladder finals.
The PBA60 Dick Weber Championship will also have two seven-game qualifying rounds but just two rounds of match play. The top 32 players based on 96 entries will advance to two rounds of match play. After 26 total games, five players will move on to the stepladder finals.
The 42-foot Chris Paul pattern will be used for the PBA60 National Championship, while, appropriately, the 45-foot Dick Weber pattern will be put down at the PBA60 Dick Weber Championship.
How to watch
Both events will be broadcast live exclusively on FloBowling with all rounds of qualifying, match play and the stepladder finals being featured.
