After putting on a dominating display in the fourth round, Jesper Svensson went on to win the PBA World Bowling Tour Thailand event as the top seed Saturday for his eighth career PBA Tour title.
Svensson defeated Sean Rash, 211-181, in the championship match to earn the top prize of one million Thai Baht, the equivalent of $32,358.06, in Bangkok, Thailand.
Svensson out-averaged the field by more than 35 pins again in the fourth round to earn the top seed. He fired games of 289, 300, 290, 218, 279 and 195 for 1,571, a 261.83 average. Rash earned the second seed with 1,354, a 225.67 average.
The hard-throwing two-handed lefty used his trusty Storm Pitch Black urethane ball to help him win the title in a low-scoring final match.
Rash and Svensson only threw one strike between the two of them in the first five frames of the title battle, but Svensson was able to throw a critical three-bagger in frames six, seven and eight to build a 33-pin lead.
Svensson left the difficult 2-4-7-8 spare in the ninth frame, which could have opened the door for Rash, but he was able to convert the spare. He struck on a light mixer on his first shot in the finale frame to essentially shut Rash out.
Rash struggled early on in the championship match, going high on his first five shots. He left a 3-6-9-10 in the first frame, 4-6 split in the second, 3-10 split in the third, 4-9 split in the fourth and a three pin in the fifth.
Rash did manage to find his way and toss a double in the seventh and eighth frames, but a high shot in the ninth frame that left a three pin kept him from mounting a comeback.
The championship round featured eight players, including the top woman and top Thai bowler.
In the opening match, Wes Malott, Yannaphon Larpapharat and Liz Johnson faced off with the highest scoring advancing. Larpapharat shot 225 to advance, while Johnson had 193 and Malott shot 182.
The next match was a similar three-way battle with the winner advancing as Ryan Ciminelli posted 220 to eliminate Larpapharat (216) and Cheah Ray Han (186).
The final three matches of the championship round were heads up as Ciminelli took down Dom Barrett, 206-184, and then lost by a narrow margin to Rash, 209-208, in the semifinal.
