CENTREVILLE, Va. – After months of waiting, the advancing players in the PBA Cheetah Championship finally took to the lanes Thursday for match play at the 2020 PBA World Series of Bowling.
The Round of 16 and Round of 8 took place at Bowlero Centerville with four players surviving the best-of-five match play to make the show, which will air Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on FS1 (United States) and FloBowling (international). Darren Tang, Packy Hanrahan, Sean Rash and EJ Tackett will battle for the title.
Tang made the show in shocking fashion as he defeated Francois Lavoie, 3-2, in the Round of 8. Lavoie needed to convert a 10 pin to secure a tie in Game 5 but missed it to the right to hand Tang a 228-227 win in the deciding game.
Tang took a 2-0 lead in the match with wins of 215-180 and 212-205 before Lavoie rallied with wins of 223-221 and 238-196.
Lavoie could have won the match outright with a double in the final frame of Game 5. He got the first strike but then left the dreaded 10 pin on his second shot.
Hanrahan, meanwhile, took down fellow lefty Jakob Butturff, 3-1, while EJ Tackett swept Wes Malott, 3-0.
Rash won a back-and-forth match with Kyle Troup to make the show, advancing with a 3-2 victory. Rash secured the win with a 254-189 win in Game 5.
