Match 7: Svensson def. Tackett, 267-267, 10-10, 10-9 (USA 6, Europe 1)

The first session is over and Europe finally got on the board as Jesper Svensson defeated EJ Tackett in double overtime. The Weber Cup is now on a break until 1 p.m. Eastern when Session 2 will begin.

Team USA leads 6-1 at the break despite losing the final match of the session and has a big edge in the race to 23 points.

Tackett had a chance to put the USA up 7-0 with a strike on his final shot of the game but left an absolutely brutal nine pin. That allowed Svensson to strike on his final shot to tie the game at 267-267.

In the sudden death overtime, both players struck on their first shot. Tackett then left a 10 pin in the second overtime, while Svensson delivered a clutch strike to give his side its first win.

Match 6: Barnes/O’Neill def. Williams/Larsen, 268-240 (USA 6, Europe 0)

Chris Barnes and Bill O’Neill teamed up for a 268-240 win over Stu Williams and Thomas Larsen as the USA has taken a commanding 6-0 lead at the Weber Cup.

Europe continues to not be able to put any pressure on Team USA.

Barnes and O’Neill never trailed in the match after opening with a double. O’Neill left a 10 pin in the third but the pair strung together four strikes in a row from the fourth through the seventh frames to take a 22-pin lead.

Williams and Larsen kept the match close through six frames but Williams left a 2-8 in the seventh and followed it up with a 10 pin in the eighth to fall behind even more.

In the final frame, Larsen left the super washout on his first shot in the 10th frame and even though Williams converted the spare, there was no pressure applied to the USA side.

Barnes just needed three pins to secure the win and tossed a strike.

There’s one more match in this session and it’s a singles match between Jesper Svensson and EJ Tackett next as the USA goes for the session sweep.

Match 5: Simonsen def. Barrett, 268-246 (USA 5, Europe 0)

The total domination continues. Anthony Simonsen defeated Dom Barrett, 268-246, to give Team USA a 5-0 lead over Europe.

It’s only the first session, but the USA is now just 18 points from victory at the Weber Cup as they have built a big lead.

It was another tough match for Europe as Barrett left a light 4-8 in the second frame and then missed it when he cut the four in front of the eight. He left an eight pin in the third frame and a 2-10 split in the sixth.

Simonsen started the match by leaving a seven pin but then rattled off five consecutive strikes as he built a 43-pin lead.

In the final frame, Simonsen just needed nine pins on two shots and struck to easily lock up another victory.

There will be a doubles match next as Europe’s Stu Williams and Thomas Larsen try to get their side on the board against Chris Barnes and Bill O’Neill.

Match 4: Troup def. Palermaa, 255-192 (USA 4, Europe 0)

The pressure is quickly building on Europe. The U.S. side took a 4-0 lead thanks to a 255-192 win by Kyle Troup over Osku Palermaa in Match 4.

For the second consecutive match, the point was determined after just nine frames as Troup struck in the ninth for what turned out to be an easy victory.

Troup’s only misses were a light two pin in the second and a 3-4-6-7 split in the sixth frame for an open. None of that mattered, however, as Palermaa was unable to keep pace.

Despite appearing not to have a great look in the opening team match with urethane, Palermaa decided to stick with it and it may have been a mistake.

Palermaa’s ball reaction looked subpar as he only struck three times in the match. During a stretch from the third through the sixth frame, he left three 10 pins.

It’s now on to another singles match as Dom Barrett tries to stop the bleeding against Anthony Simonsen.

Match 3: O’Neill/Tackett def. Barrett/Svensson, 289-254 (USA 3, Europe 0)

The nightmare start continues for Europe as the USA takes a 3-0 lead thanks to a 289-254 doubles win by Bill O’Neill and EJ Tackett over Dom Barrett and Jesper Svensson.

The USA is setting the tone early in this race to 23 points at this year’s Weber Cup and O’Neill and Tackett only missed once in their Match 3 victory.

After starting with O’Neill leaving a four pin in the first frame, the American side wouldn’t miss again, tossing nine consecutive strikes to end the match.

Tackett locked up the win mathematically with a strike in the ninth frame.

Just two bad frames cost Europe in this match as Svensson left a light 6-9 in the second frame, while Barrett left a pocket 7-10 split in the fourth frame. They never had a chance to recover.

A singles match is next with Osku Palermaa, whose urethane didn’t look very good in the opening team match, taking on Kyle Troup.

Match 2: O’Neill def. Svensson, 268-255 (USA 2, Europe 0)

In a match where Bill O’Neill didn’t lead until after eight frames, he pulled out a 268-255 singles win over Jesper Svensson to give the USA a 2-0 lead in the race to 23 points.

Early on in the match it looked like Svensson might be on his way to a big win. He started with five consecutive strikes but then the wheels fell off.

On the next four shots, Svensson left a high 4-7, a ring seven, a six pin and a blower 10 pin before closing with a strike.

O’Neill, meanwhile, hung tough with Svensson in the early going, starting by converting a 10 pin and rattling off four consecutive strikes. His worse miss of the match was a high 3-6-7-10 split in the sixth for an open.

Despite the miscue, O’Neill was able to pop off the final four strikes to take the victory. In the final frame, O'Neill needed just eight, spare to secure the win and tossed a perfect strike.

Next up it’s a doubles match with Dom Barrett and Svensson taking on O’Neill and EJ Tackett.

Match 1: USA def. Europe, 257-212 (USA 1, Europe 0)

If the opening match of the 2020 Weber Cup is any indication of how things are going to go, it could be a good week for the United States.

The U.S. squad had a very easy win against Europe in the opening Baker match, coming away with a 257-212 win to go up 1-0.

The first match wasn’t close early as the U.S. started with six out of seven strikes with the only miss coming in the third frame when Anthony Simonsen left a ringing 10 pin.

Europe had a disaster start, opening in two of the first three frames. Osku Palermaa, who used urethane on the 44-foot pattern, left a 3-10 split in the first frame and missed it. Weber Cup rookie Thomas Larsen missed the 3-6-10 in the third frame and the rout was on.

A singles match between Jesper Svensson and Bill O'Neill is next.
