Match 19: Palermaa/Svensson def. Simonsen/Troup, 279-278 (USA 13, Europe 6)
There’s still a long road ahead but Europe managed hang in there against the USA in the first session of the day on Tuesday at the Weber Cup. The teams will return for the second session at 1 p.m. Eastern.
Capped off by a doubles win by Osku Palermaa and Jesper Svensson over Anthony Simonsen and Kyle Troup, Europe mustered a 3-3 for the session and trails 13-6 overall in the race to 23 points.
Palermaa delivered a perfect strike in the final frame to secure a one-pin win for Europe, 279-278, to end the session on a high note.
With a possible 26 matches to go, Europe will need to win 17 of them to claim the Weber Cup. Team USA just needs 10 more wins to claim the title for the third straight year.
AWESOME OSKU!

Match 18: Troup/Barnes def. Williams/Barrett, 254-210 (USA 13, Europe 5)
In the lowest scoring match of the session, the USA’s Kyle Troup and Chris Barnes came away with a relatively easy 254-210 win over Europe’s Stu Williams and Dom Barrett.
Troup and Barnes started with the front three, built an early 32-pin lead and were never really challenged in the match. By the ninth frame, they had already secured the victory.
The match was a total disaster for Williams, who left three splits in a row from frames five through seven. One of those was a Big Four, which Barrett was able to convert.
The USA now leads 13-5 in the race to 23 points and a fans’ choice doubles match is coming up next with Anthony Simonsen and Kyle Troup battling Osku Palermaa and Jesper Svensson.
The big four!

Match 17: Svensson def. O’Neill, 267-267, 10-10, 10-8 (USA 12, Europe 5)
It was another rolloff but this time a different result as Europe pulled to within 12-5 with a win by its strongest player, Jesper Svensson.
Svensson defeated Bill O’Neill in double overtime after they finished the game tied 267-267. Svensson has now been involved in four of Europe’s five points.
Both players struck to open overtime but in the second rolloff, O’Neill got the ball high and left the 4-7, all but assuring a loss.
Svensson had little trouble delivering a perfect strike for the victory.
So far today, the USA and Europe have each won two matches with two more to go in this session.
Next up will be a doubles match with Stu Williams and Dom Barrett taking on Kyle Troup and Chris Barnes.

Match 16: Tackett/Simonsen def. Barrett/Larsen, 244-244, 10-10, 10-10, 10-7 (USA 12, Europe 4)
In the longest rolloff of this Weber Cup, Europe suffered one of its most devastating defeats yet.
EJ Tackett and Anthony Simonsen defeated Dom Barrett and Thomas Larsen in the third overtime to put the USA up 12-4 in the race to 23. After finishing regulation tied at 244-244, the USA won 10-7 on the third rolloff.
The European squad squandered a 21-pin lead down the stretch in regulation when Larsen left the 4-7 and Barrett stepped up to shoot the spare and missed it.
In overtime, both sides struck in the first two rounds but it was Barrett again with an incredible error, missing well inside to leave the 6-9-10 combination.
Needing just eight pins for the win, Simonsen delivered a strike.
Coming up next is the final singles match of this session as Jesper Svensson takes on Bill O’Neill.
Simonsen gets it done!

Match 15: Larsen def. Tackett, 288-278 (USA 11, Europe 4)
In the tensest moment yet of this Weber Cup, Thomas Larsen came up clutch to defeat EJ Tackett and pull Europe to within 11-4.
There were plenty of strikes in Larsen’s 288-278 victory, which is the highest-scoring match yet at the 2020 event.
Tackett started with the front six, while Larsen had the front five before going high and leaving a 3-6, which he made.
Tackett’s string ended with a flat 10 pin in the seventh frame and his only other miss was in the ninth frame when he left another 10 pin. On that shot it appeared Tackett got the ball a bit inside of target.
But when the time came for Weber Cup rookie Larsen to shine, he was up to the task. He needed a strike on his final shot for the victory and tossed a perfect strike.
Now it’s on to a doubles match where Dom Barrett and Larsen will take on Anthony Simonsen and Tackett.

Match 14: Simonsen def. Palermaa, 278-265 (USA 11, Europe 3)
After a night’s rest, Team USA picked up right where it left off as Anthony Simonsen defeated Osku Palermaa, 278-265, in the opening match of the day. The Americans now lead 11-3 in the race to 23 points.
Simonsen had a perfect start to the match, starting with the front eight and looking like he might pop off the event’s first 300 game this year. Instead, a ringing 10 pin ended his hopes of perfection in the ninth frame.
Palermaa, using urethane once again after struggling with it on the first day, had a bit of a shaky start and fell behind early. He left a 10 pin in the first frame and a 3-6-10 in the second.
To his credit, Palermaa hung in there, striking on seven of his final eight shots, including the last five, to keep Simonsen honest.
Simonsen just needed seven pins in the final frame and got nine to lock it up.
Next up it’s a singles match between Thomas Larsen and EJ Tackett.
