The PBA50 Storm Invitational featured a stellar field and the drama didn’t disappoint. Here are three observations from the event:
Pete Weber pulls a muscle
Fans following the standings during Sunday’s final round of match play may have noticed that Pete Weber stopped competing after Game 11 of the tournament. Turns out, Weber was forced to withdraw.
Weber tells FloBowling he pulled his “butt muscle” and his status for the upcoming FloBowling PBA Fall Swing is in jeopardy.
After the first round of match play on Saturday, Weber was in 11th place and 180 pins out of fifth. He started Sunday’s final seven games of match play with 218, 224 and 216 before shooting 172 and withdrawing with three games to go.
When asked whether or not he will be good to go for the Fall Swing, which begins Oct. 15, Weber said he didn’t know yet and would have to wait and see.
Norm Duke’s miss was stunning
If you haven’t watched the stepladder finals yet, you will find yourself totally stunned by what happened in the fifth frame of the championship match.
Norm Duke, working on four strikes in a row to start the game, goes a little high and leaves a nine pin in the fifth. For Duke, a single pin spare conversion is about a sure a bet as you can get. Not this time, however.
Duke stepped up and whiffed the nine pin to the left for a shocking open frame. So, what happened on the shot? It looks like Duke may be human after all and just missed his target left.
Based on his reaction, no one was more surprised at the miss than Duke himself, who went on to lose the event to Walter Ray Williams Jr.
Walter Ray’s wife is the fan every bowler needs
There was absolutely no doubt who had the most vocal fan at the PBA50 Storm Invitational. Every time Williams tossed the ball down the lane, you could hear one distinct voice screaming for the bowling legend.
So, who was the mystery woman? It was Williams’ wife, Fancy, who was enjoying the moment and cheering on her man. The two were married last year.
Fancy’s passion wasn’t appreciated by some fans on Facebook, who criticized her for all the cheering, but she was rightly unapologetic to the social media scrooges.
“What can I say… I love my husband and cheering him for the win! I hope all of you have someone to cheer for! Xoxo,” Fancy said on the FloBowling Facebook page.
We say keep on cheering, Fancy!
