Title No. 1: Simonsen Nearly Makes History In 2016
When Anthony Simonsen won his first title in 2016, he nearly made history.
This is the first of a seven-part series looking back on Anthony Simonsen’s titles on the PBA Tour. Be sure to watch FloBowling’s first documentary titled “Simonsen: Leave It Behind” live on Sept. 4 at Noon Eastern.
When Anthony Simonsen won his first title in 2016, he nearly made history.
At the age of 18 years, 347 days, Simonsen missed the record held by Norm Duke for youngest PBA Tour champion by just two days when he teamed with Connor Pickford to win the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship.
Simonsen and Pickford ran away with the title match, defeating Josh Blanchard and Andres Gomez, 223-173, in Reno, Nevada, as they each won their first title.
The interesting twist to this story, however, is that Simonsen and Pickford actually qualified for the finals in October of that year in Las Vegas but the finals were not taped until December. Had the finals been taped when they earned their spot, Simonsen would have easily broken Duke’s record.
“I was originally a little bitter about the age record,” Simonsen told the PBA after his win. “Early in the year, when I found out what the record was, I made it a mission to bowl every tournament that offered a Tour title to get the record. But missing it by two days? A tour title is a tour title, no matter when it happens.”
