The news came out this week that CBS had ordered the half-hour pilot centered around Smallwood. The show is untitled for now and was written by Mark Gross (Mike & Molly, Man With a Plan) and will be produced by David Hollander (Ray Donovan) and Brian D’Arcy James (Hamilton, The Comey Rule).
At this point, only a pilot has been ordered for the multi-camera comedy, meaning its future is still to be determined based on how the pilot turns out. No information has been released on when or where it will be available or who will be cast to play Smallwood.
“Our team has been working on this project for a long time," Smallwood said in a statement. "I’m excited that it finally can happen."
Smallwood’s story is an inspirational one and one that is well known within the bowling community. However, the opportunity to tell that story to a wider audience while at the same time promoting professional bowling could prove positive for the sport.
In a report about the pilot being ordered, the Hollywood Reporter described it as revolving around “a seemingly ordinary man who, after being laid off from the assembly line at the GM factory, makes the extraordinary decision to provide for his family by following his dream of becoming a pro bowler.”
Smallwood has had success on the PBA Tour, winning three titles including two majors. So far this year, he has finished fourth in the PBA Players Championship and sixth in the PBA Tournament of Champions.
Smallwood will next compete in the PBA World Series of Bowling, which will be broadcast live on FloBowling starting on Sunday.
